Calgary Women's Update

Well, it’s that time of year... the sun is starting to shine, the grass is starting to green, the snow is continuing to fall... summer is practically upon us! And most importantly... the frisbees are starting to fly!

Been having fun at women’s spring league? Keen to get involved in more women’s ultimate (whether that means building your skills, traveling to out-of-town tournaments, etc.)? If so, then Wild Rose (Calgary’s competitive women’s ultimate team) strongly encourages you to do the following:
  • Continue visiting our blog – it’s your best one-shot source for Calgary women’s ultimate info.
  • Complete and submit this survey form by Tuesday, May 11 if you would like to practice or play tournaments with us this summer: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dEVpR3M4RDdodFVOV2N0OWhzcFZEZ2c6MQ.
  • Sign up for the Wild Rose email list (send us an email at calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com to get added). This email list will only be used for general announcements – please continue checking here for the latest updates.

PRACTICES

Who: Open to ladies of any skill level.

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30pm-8:30pm, starting Tuesday, May 4.

What: Tuesdays will focus more on skills and drills. Thursdays will focus more on competitive play and strategies. Majority of practices leading up to Flowerbowl (see below) will be women’s only. However, a few Thursday practices will be coed to boost player numbers and benefit from the experience of the Calgary men’s team.

Where: Market Mall fields.

What if?: Any practice changes (e.g., location) or cancellations (due to weather) will be posted here, so please check regularly.

FLOWERBOWL

What:
Wild Rose’s first fun and competitive tournament of the year (more info here).

When: June 5-6, 2010

Where: Vancouver, BC

Who: If you are interested in attending with Wild Rose, please fill out our survey form. There are 10 Tuesday/Thursday practices between now and Flowerbowl. To attend Flowerbowl, we request you attend as many of those practices as possible, with the last four practices before the tournament being mandatory*. *Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis, so if you are interested in coming to Flowerbowl but are concerned about your practice availability, please get in touch with us anyway!

Carra4Ward9 Supporters Needed

A quick message from our Wild Rose 2009 captain, Barb Carra:

How great will it be to have an Ultimate friendly Alderman on City Council? Long-time Calgary Frisbee player Gian-Carlo Carra is running for Ward 9 in the October 18th, 2010 election. Let's do everything we can to make sure he gets elected.

Thurs, Apr 29 – Canceled

With the winter storm warning in effect and a forecast of horizontal rain/snow/wind and low temperatures for tomorrow evening, we're canceling practice this Thursday.

If the weather is more co-operative next week, Tuesday May 4, will be our first official women's practice! Check back here early next week for more info.

Flowerbowl Info

If you're considering joining us for Flowerbowl, here are some of the details:

When: June 5–6, 2010
Starts ~9 am on Saturday, and likely ends by 5 pm on Sunday.

Where: UBC campus, Vancouver, BC

Cost:
Approximately $400 for the weekend, based on:
  • $275 for flight, with seat sale
  • $60 for 2 nights of dorm accommodation at UBC
  • $40 for tournament fee
  • $20 for public transit to and from the airport
  • + food and other misc. costs (e.g., team dinner on Saturday)

Thurs, Apr 15 – Co-ed Session

Hi ladies,

We're going to try again to head outdoors – the plan for this Thursday is to do some co-ed scrimmage (open to anyone) at the Queen Elizabeth fields. Depending on numbers and interest, we might do a drill or two to start, or we might just break out into teams and play. We'll be there @ 6:30 pm – dress weather-appropriately, and hope to see you out!

Update: Thurs, Apr 8 – Indoors Fitness

Winter has returned with a vengeance - we are postponing outdoor activities till next week.

If anyone's interested in indoors fitness, Lucky will be hosting a ladies-only session at the usual place. Meet us at the side door to the Police Administration building, 316-7th Ave SE. This building is on the C-Train line (on the same block and just east of the downtown library), so park on 3rd St SE between 6th and 9th Ave SE.

We'll meet at 6:30 pm and be done by 8 pm. Don't forget to bring a waterbottle with you. If you have any questions or arrive late, please call Lucky.

Thurs, Apr 8 – Co-ed Pick-up

Hi ladies,

The plan for this Thursday is to do some co-ed pick-up at the Market Mall fields. We'll talk basics with the guys and maybe work on some skills and drills, before just playing for a bit. We'll be there @ 6:30 pm, rain or shine - dress warm, and hope to see you out!
