Recap on Women's Ultimate Info Session

Thanks to everyone who came out to our info session on March 31. Great to see some familiar faces as well as new ones! Here's a rundown of what was discussed. If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this post or send us an email.

Women's Skill Building / Development
  • Spring League starts Monday, April 4! If you missed the registration deadline but still want to play, email the CUA to get onto a team. This is a great place to learn new skills and try out the women's game! More details are here.
  • Women's practices & scrimmages will start in mid-April (once the snow clears) and will run on Thursdays till Spring League ends, then Mondays & Thursdays for the rest of the summer, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. All skills are welcome....just be prepared to give 100%. We run drills, work on skills, and then scrimmage as a group. Even if you're not interested in playing competitively, this is a great place to polish your throws, learn some strategy and get a good game in. We'll post locations closer to mid-April but it'll likely be the Market Mall fields.
  • Flowerbowl is a Vancouver tournament happening June 4-5. We'd really like to take two Calgary teams to this tournament, with a mix of experienced and developmental players, so please talk to us if you're interested. This is a great tournament for getting a true feel of women's ultimate, is a great learning experience, and is a ton of fun! If you only go to one women's tournament this year, make it this one.
Competitive Scene / Wild Rose 2011
  • Three players have been chosen as Wild Rose's team captains and 'on-field' voices for 2011. Please welcome this year's leadership trio:
    - Jill Kowalchuk
    - Nathalie Woodhouse
    - Nicole (Lucky) Desjardins
  • Wild Rose will be playing in the following tournaments:
    - Flowerbowl (Vancouver) June 4-5
    - Kelowna Women's Tournament July 9-10
    - Alberta Regionals (if needed - date & location TBD)
    - CUC 2011 (Ottawa) August 11-14
  • If you're interested in playing competitively with Wild Rose and attending CUC 2011, we expect that you'll try to attend all or most of the season's practices....but of course we understand that people have vacation plans, maybe some kids, or other sorts of commitments. If you foresee any complications with regular attendance at practices or tournaments, please talk to us and we can work something out.
So.....What Are Your Plans?
To help us plan the season, please fill out this brief survey. This is just to give us a feel for numbers, peoples' availability, etc.

Other items
  • We're selling Wild Rose discs as a fundraiser this year. One for $15 or two for $25. If you or someone you know would like a disc, contact us.
  • Wild Rose is looking for a non-player coach to support and train the team this year. If you or someone you know would be interested in this position, check out the details here.
  • We've submitted a proposal to the CUA for some funding assistance, and if we get that funding we are considering setting up a 'scholarship' program to assist a player (likely a university student) to attend CUC with us. Criteria for receiving this scholarship has yet to be determined, but financial need would be part of it. More details to come.
That's about it for now. If you have any questions on any of the items noted above, please contact us. Otherwise, we hope to see you on the fields for Spring League, and stay tuned here for more details on our first official practice & scrimmage in mid-April!
