Another Highlight Reel - Layouts Galore!

Thanks to the snow on the ground, I'm sure ultimate is one of the furthest things from your minds these days (especially since Winter League doesn't start till January). Lucky for you, I've come across another video to keep you psyched for playing outdoors again next spring! Ultivillage just released a highlight reel of their World Juniors coverage in Germany this summer.
The girls teams (aka future womens teams!) got some great exposure in this video - in fact, Canada's girls are even featured as the intro clip, where a great sideline flip lets them put up a huge huck and a layout for the score!! .....Mental note - we should do this more! ;-)
Layouts seemed to the be theme for this reel - those kids sure like to leave their feet! But it just goes to show, leading passes are where it's at because it puts the disc that extra bit out of reach of a potential defender and lets you run hard onto it. Say, maybe that snow on the ground can be put to good use this winter....doll yourself up in a full body snowsuit and go practice your layouts! ;-) Or maybe just watch this video and get excited for Spring League.....
Let us know your favourite clip from the reel - post your comments below!

(Helpful Hint: don't watch this using Firefox, there seems to be some formatting problems on the Ultivillage page when using that browser. Safari worked fine, so I am assuming others will too.)

And PS: Thanks to all the ladies who helped out with the 'Go-Girl' session last month to help teach local girls how to play ultimate. Hope it was fun!

You Go Girl!

Calling all ultimate ladies in Calgary with a lunch-hour to spare...The Calgary Ultimate Association has passed along word of a program called "Go-Girl" that is looking for volunteers to help put on an ultimate frisbee session for young girls on November 13. Don't worry, you won't be left to wing it -- the CUA has a "lesson plan" type package that it would provide, as well as a teaching kit that the CUA Juniors Coordinator uses for his school clinics. Basically, we'd just want you to go out and throw the disc around with girls. Fun right? You betcha! If you're interested, please contact communications@calgaryultimate.org and we'll get you signed up.

Early Fall Update

Congrats Wild Rose on a top 8 finish at the Canadian Ultimate Championships this year! Not only did the team achieve its goal, the CUC ladies also had a lot of fun, some highlights being: winning on universe against Salty, scoring 13 points against Stella, improving throughout the tournament on its (many :) team goals, and getting to hear lots of interesting stories about people's "friends" ;)

The CUC ladies put a lot of hard work into preparing for Nationals this year, but we also wanted to say a big thanks to all of the ladies who weren't able to be with us in Sherbrooke but still contributed many hours to help lead women's practices, participate in fundraising, and those who came out to practices to help boost numbers. We hope that you'll join Wild Rose next year for CUC in Ottawa!!

  • Wild Rose will definitely be attending Flowerbowl in Vancouver (in early June) and CUC in Ottawa (August 11-14)
  • Wild Rose would also like to attend a third tournament (TBD)

Early June Update

Hi ladies,

A few things to note as June begins:

Week after Flowerbowl
There will be no practices on June 8 or June 10. We will take a well-deserved break after playing all weekend in Vancouver!

Canadian Ultimate Championships
We are looking at going to Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) in Sherbrooke, from August 12-15.

If you are interested in playing CUC with Wild Rose, please send us an email by next Wednesday, June 9, and let us know that you're interested. Please let us also know if you are semi-interested, and what dependencies you may have (e.g., costs, work, practice commitment, etc.). We need to decide if we're going ahead with a CUC team by mid-June.

Estimated cost is ~$900:
  • flight is ~$600 to Montreal
  • there is a free shuttle from Montreal to Sherbrooke, and from the tourney hotels to the fields
  • on-campus (on-site) housing is ~$45/night, which works out to ~$180 for 4 nights
  • $25 for an Ultimate Canada membership
  • ~$100 for CUC tournament fee
  • + food and other misc. costs
Take some time to consider it, and in the meantime, send us email at calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com if you have any questions!

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Thursday, May 27, 2010

Practice tonight is ON, but due to the rain our location is changing to the turf fields at Shouldice Athletic Park. We’ll be scrimmaging and running around lots, but dress warm and wear lots of layers. More about Calgary Women's Ultimate...

One of our focuses this year is to build the women's scene in Calgary. That means we're going to spend the first part of the season introducing new faces to the women's game in addition to developing the skills of intermediate players. As we move into the middle of summer, we'll shift our focus to building a competitive Wild Rose team for traveling to tournaments.

Any lady is welcome to come out to our practices – April practices will be fairly informal and will mostly focus on fitness and throwing; starting in May, practices will become more structured with specific drills and scrimmages. We’ll post more detailed practice info on our website soon, but for now, here’s some information about how this year will run:

Calgary Women's Ultimate

(for players interested in women’s ultimate or interested in improving their skills)

Calgary women’s ultimate is for ladies who are interested in seeing what the women's game is all about or who would like to practice in a ladies-only environment, but don't necessarily have the time or the desire to play competitively full-time with the team. All skill levels are welcome, we just ask that you come prepared to work hard and be open to learning new styles of play.

Is this for you? It is if you answer yes to any of these criteria.... Do you want to:
  • improve your throwing and catching
  • learn which cuts will get you the disc more often
  • learn more about basic defensive and offensive strategies
  • have never played women's before, but would like to try it out
  • attend practices here and there, but not commit full-time
  • want a great workout to stay in shape throughout the season
Wild Rose Touring Team: 2010 Season
(for players interested in practicing full-time and traveling to competitive tournaments)

As Calgary's only touring women's team, Wild Rose is keen to build a squad of players willing to practice and train regularly, travel to out-of-town tournaments, and take their skills to a higher level of competitive play. Women in this group are expected to already have experience playing at a high-B or A Division level of ultimate. There will still be room for improvement, but a base set of throwing, catching and cutting skills is expected.

Is this for you? It is if you answer yes to all of these criteria.... Do you want to:
  • commit two nights a week to practicing/scrimmages
  • improve your technique, field sense and red-zone decision-making
  • sharpen your current skill base as well as broaden the skills you have (e.g., perfect your huck!)
  • learn advanced offensive and defensive strategies
  • travel to two or three out-of-town tournaments (the first being Flowerbowl, June 5-6, in Vancouver, BC)
If you are interested in either of the above, please come out and join us! Our first unofficial practice will be Thursday, April 8, starting at 6:30 pm – check back here next week for location information.

If you have any questions or want to be added to our email list, please email us at calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com. Wild Rose will also have team members on each of the CUA Women’s Spring League teams, so keep an eye out for ladies wearing a Wild Rose jersey and feel free to introduce yourself and ask questions in person!

We look forward to seeing new faces on the fields this year :)

Please send an email to calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com if you'd like to be on our email list. Updates will also be posted to this website, so check back often!

Tues/Thurs practices
Practices will continue to be Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30pm this summer. If you're interested in playing women's, please schedule your league team for another night!

CUA Spring League
Not sure yet if you like women's ultimate? Sign up for the CUA women's spring hat league! All skill levels welcome - it starts in April, and runs every Monday evening for six weeks.

Open practices
Still not sure yet if you like women's ultimate? Drop in on one of our practices in April or May and check things out. All skill levels welcome - come pick up some tips and get in some intense but fun practice with a bunch of other ladies who love the sport!

Tournaments
We are definitely going to Flowerbowl, June 5th and 6th in Vancouver - start looking for cheap flights! Flowerbowl is a great tournament with a mix of experienced and newer teams, and we will take all ladies who are interested in playing and are willing to commit to coming out to our May practices. Possible other tournaments are: No Borders in July, Canadian Ultimate Championships in August, and/or UPA NW Sectionals in September.

What's next?
If the weather is decent, we will start doing fitness/throwing and/or informal practices on Thursday evenings in April. Check our website each week for whether Thursday evenings are on or not, and also for further updates.

Any questions? Please email calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com.

Hope to see you on the field very soon!!
