Women's Masters Division at CUC 2013?
So what's the likelihood of Women's Masters ultimate being played on home turf? According to a new proposal in the works, it could be as early as CUC 2013 in Vancouver, BC.
The minds behind it are Mandy Wintink, Nat Fitzgerald, Alena Papayanis and Hadiya Roderique -- a small but determined group who are committed to flushing out the details and rallying support for the idea. The goal is to have a proposal for a Womens Masters Division at CUC 2013 ready to present to the Ultimate Canada Board of Directors by January. To get involved in this project and/or to stay connected with its progress, join the Facebook Group. Spread the word!

Women's Ultimate Isn't Worth Watching...
Say what??
Does the title of this blog post get your blood boiling?
We hope so.
Apparently this is the opinion of one of the largest video marketers of ultimate, NexGen, and the lack of womens DVD sales and viewership to date is what they're standing by as their proof of the statement above. For more on that, see this other article.
So let's prove them wrong!
NexGen is streaming the Team Canada vs. Fury game today - Saturday, June 16 - for FREE and they will be watching to see how many people tune in.
Let's blow them away with viewership of this women's game (and not just because Calgary's very own Terri Whitehead will be starring in the show! ps. That's Terri above, rocking the downfield against her now fellow teammate on Team Canada - go Terri!).

Info Session Recap
Here's the recap of what was discussed at the Calgary Womens Ultimate Information Session.
Once you have read this information, we encourage all women to complete this short survey to indicate your interest for the season.
Focus and plan for the season
This year's season will be a combination of Development and Competitive. Calgary Women's Ultimate will be holding tryouts on Thursday, May 10 and Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 pm at the Market Mall fields. We are looking to take two teams to Flowerbowl (Vancouver: June 2-3). All are welcome to come and tryout.
If needed we will be making cuts prior to Flowerbowl, but given we would like to take two teams, we expect that all women who would like to participate in Flowerbowl will be able to join us.
Flowerbowl (Vancouver: June 2-3)
Our goal is to take two teams to Flowerbowl. This year we will be taking an A team which will play in the Elite Womens Division and a B team that will play in the Womens Division. This tournament is an excellent opportunity to get some play time and get a feeling for what playing a womens tournament is like. We will have dormitories booked, a team dinner on Saturday, and it has been a very positive and fun experience in the past.
Tryouts
Tryouts will be used both to make teams for Flowerbowl as well as for Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC). If you are interested in playing CUC then we encourage you to try to attend both tryouts and Flowerbowl. However, we understand there are special cases so if you are not able to make it please let us know in the survey and we will do our best to accommodate. The CUC team will be selected based on skill, fit with the team, commitment and fitness.
Practices
Practices will be held on Monday evenings at Calgary Rugby Union and Thursday evenings at Market Mall fields. Everyone is welcome to attend practices until May 25, and then practices will be limited to women who are coming to Flowerbowl and/or interested in CUC and/or are on the practice roster. Following Flowerbowl the CUC team will be picked. Practices will be closed to the CUC team and a practice roster.
CUC (Victoria: Aug 16-19)
In addition to Flowerbowl, the CUC team will be attending the womens tournament in Kelowna (July 7-8). We are also looking at a training camp weekend in Canmore in July prior to CUC. We will be selecting 18-20 women for the CUC team.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at calgarywomensultimate@gmail.com.
Please complete the survey ASAP but by end of day Wednesday, May 9th at the latest. The survey can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform? formkey=dFgySUdaYzlBOTh1U3FGQjc5NVBJV2c6MA#gid=0

Since the un-spring-like weather cancelled our session last week, join us this week for another attempt! Focus will be on core strength (so bring a yoga mat or blanket/towel to lay on the ground) and throwing. for Wild Rose or not). Here are the details:
Thursday, April 12
6:00 pm
Crescent Heights Park (throwing location at top of Memorial Drive Stairs)

If the weather turns on us again, please check here and/or on Twitter to see if we've cancelled.
Got an idea for a fitness activity? Email us and we'll organize it. Stay tuned to this site for upcoming session info.

Big Spring Update - Lots Happening April, May & June!
With spring right around the corner, we've got lots of news to share on some fun ulti events coming up as well as all the ways you can play with Calgary Women's Ultimate this year!
Spring League Starts April 2 - Have You Registered?
We can't promote this enough.....it's a great way to start the season, introduce new women to the game, and make new friends on the field. Hosted by the Calgary Ultimate Association (CUA), this six-week women's league runs on Monday nights (on turf fields!) and is open to ALL skill levels (from beginners to competitive players). Bring a friend and sign up as a pair! Teams will feature a diversity of skills and each team will include one or two Wild Rose competitive players to lend tips and answer questions. For more details or to register online, check out the CUA's Spring League info.
Women's Practices - Mondays & Thursdays
Thursday practices will start mid-April and after Spring League ends, practices will be Mondays and Thursdays for the rest of the season. Leading up to June, practices will be open to all skills and focused on development and skill-building. Spread the word -- all ladies are welcome. We run drills, work on skills, and then scrimmage as a group. Even if you're not interested in playing competitively, this is a great place to polish your throws, learn some strategy, and get a good game in. Stay tuned to the website for dates and location details. After June, we'll be having 'closed' practices, with a competitive focus for those playing with Wild Rose at the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC).
Women's Skills Clinic - May 3
Join Wild Rose on Thursday, May 3 for a Women's Skills Clinic. This will be a great intro for any ladies new to the sport and/or for any women wanting to sharpen their skills. We'll work on throwing & catching, touch on some strategy, and wrap-up with a fun scrimmage. Location will be our Market Mall fields, beginning at 6:30 pm sharp. This session is free and all levels are welcome. Bring a friend -- the more the merrier!
Wild Rose Tryouts - May 10 & 12
Want to take your game to the next level? Want to work harder, run faster, and dig deeper? Want to go to Nationals?? Wild Rose will be hosting open tryouts May 10 and 12 for the team that will represent Alberta at the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) in Victoria, BC on August 16 - 19. Tryouts are open to any woman interested in practicing and travelling with the team full-time during the summer season. Tournament travel will include Flowerbowl (June 2-3, Vancouver, BC), Kelowna KAOS (July 7 - 8, Kelowna, BC), and CUC (Aug 16 - 19, Victoria, BC). Interested players must attend both tryout days. If you can't attend both, but still want to tryout for the team, please email us.
Spring Hat Tournament - May 13
Book off Sunday, May 13 for a fun day of ultimate and join Wild Rose and the masterly men of FIGJAM for their legendary Spring Hat Tourney. Everyone is welcome, and teams are made randomly. Always a good time, this tourney kicks off Summer League and is a great opportunity to play with a new crew and maybe pick up a tip or two along the way. Registration details will be posted soon -- keep your eyes on our website.
Flowerbowl 2012 - June 2 & 3
Since we had such a great time last year, Calgary Women's Ultimate is going to try and send two women's teams to Flowerbowl again this year. We're looking for a mix of experienced and development players. This is a great early-season tournament and an excellent opportunity to play against women's teams from across the region. If you only go to one women's tournament this year, make it this one! Stay tuned for more information.
Fitness: Worth Its Weight in Sweat!
Remember how great it feels whenever you can outrun and outlast your opponent? Tip: Start focusing on conditioning this month and carry that through to the regular season. Get your sprints in now to be able to blow everyone away in May! Since it's usually more fun and motivating to push through a workout with buddies, we're going to run some group fitness sessions over the next month or two for stairs running, throwing, and other winter-weight-removal activities. Got an idea for an fitness activity? Email us and we'll organize it. Otherwise, stay tuned to the website and join us for these workouts. All ladies are welcome (even those not trying out for Wild Rose).
Coach for the 2012 Season
Wild Rose is considering using a non-player coach for the 2012 season. A full description of the role and responsibilities has been posted to the website. If you are interested in this position, please email Wild Rose no later than March 29, 2012 indicating your interest and expected commitment level.
That's all for now. We’re going to hold an info session / social in late April to answer questions and provide additional info. Keep an eye on our website and our Twitter account (@WildRoseUlti) for updates!
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the fields soon!
